Transparent and opaque oil colours, what is the difference

In this video I’ll show and tell the difference between transparent and opaque oil colors and where to look for it on tube.

Summary:

There are 4 levels of transparency:

  1. Opaque – Not translucent when painted in a thick layer, and thinners can’t dilute them to a “watercolor” state.
  2. Semi-opaque
  3. Semi-transparent
  4. Transparent –Translucent even if painted in a thick layer, and thinners can dilute them to a “watercolor” state.

There are symbols of transparency level on the tubes:

  1. Filled square – an opaque color
  2. Half-empty square – a semi-opaque color
  3. Transparent square with a diagonal line – a semi-transparent color
  4. Empty square – a transparent color
